Tire Tread

The "penny test" has long been the standard for determining when tire tread reaches dangerously low levels, but The Tire Rack recently conducted a study that suggests that the top of Washington's noggin (which is 2/16ths of an inch from the coin's circumference) might be a more accurate indicator than the tip of Lincoln's dome (which is only 1/16th of an inch away from the edge.)

The findings of their study suggest that they incorporated objective, scientific testing methods using state of the art equipment, but then again, these guys are in the business of selling tires.

While it's easy to dismiss their more stringent standard, when you're riding on two wheels it's always a good idea to err in the direction of safety. After all, we have much more to lose than our four-wheeled friends in the unfortunate event of traction loss...
