How I Spent My Summer Vacation: European Musings

Monday December 3, 2007
Parked Ducati Summer already feels miles away, and during the warmest season I was fortunate enough to travel to Europe twice in the same month.

The first time, I went to France and Spain to empty my bank account thanks to the mighty Euro for a vacation. Foreign bike cultures always fascinate me, and though my wife and I toured by car, we took every opportunity to document two (and sometimes three) wheeled culture. My European motorcycle and scooter gallery documents everything from a tiny, tricked out pseudo-Supermoto bike to my unfortunate encounter with the motorcycle-riding law. Check it out.

Lamborghini Reventon

My second trip involved a rare assignment: to spend a day driving the only $1.4 million Lamborghini Reventón in existence, of which only 20 will be produced. You can see my Lamborghini Reventón photo gallery at Aaron Gold's Cars site, and read my Reventón review there, as well.

Enjoy!

Pete,

I couldn’t BELIEVE how many scooters were out there!

At least car drivers are aware in the city; they have to be, since they’re surrounded by all sorts of bikes.

I’ve never been to Europe, but I live in Japan and it sounds very similar to here. Scooters everywhere, and even those with two straight guys together!!!

If gas tops $5/gallon in the US, I predict we’ll see scooter sales spike.

Lambo looks great. Hope the buyers have more sense and driving skills than some of the Enzo buyers who seem to total those on a regular basis. Still odd to see a supercar without a stick shift.

Lovely vacation… a Reventon would be one of the few cars that has the potential to make me give up motorcycling. :)

I thought the Enzo that was (in)famously crashed in SoCal was stolen…

I think it’s odd for a modern supercar NOT to have a F-1 inspired paddle shift system. Ferrari’s latest street version (as seen in the 430 Scuderia) has shift times of ~ 60ms. Faster and smoother than any human with a conventional manual transmission.
