Cruise Hogs First Desmosedici

Wednesday January 30, 2008
Tom Cruise Cruising

If you've secretly dreamed of plucking the first $72,500 Ducati Desmosedici RR off the assembly line, now's the time to wake up: Tom Cruise has dibs on the very first production specimen.* In an AP-sourced news item, Ducati CEO Michael Lock announced (with no degree of subtlety) that "We are delighted to be able to deliver the world's first production unit here in the USA to Tom Cruise, who is a well-known Ducati enthusiast."

Mr. Cruise, seen here cruising to a movie premiere on his $70,000 Confederate Hellcat, has also made red carpet appearances on a Honda Rune and a Triumph Scrambler. There's no word yet on whether he intends to fully explore the Duc's 200 mph capabilities, but one thing's for certain: this high-profile Ducati placement is the latest in a truly astounding string of wins for the Bologna-based manufacturer.

* I've received some clarification from Ducati: The Desmosedici #001-- technically the first Desmosedici to roll off the assembly line-- is destined for the Ducati Museum. Tom Cruise was announced as the first recipient of the bike, though he hasn't physically picked up the motorcycle yet from Ducati of Beverly Hills. --Basem Wasef

Tom Cruise is THE most over rated actor and one of the complete nut-job celebries of our time, but you still need to give Ducati credit for a genius pubicity move.

When I think how much time I wasted watching Risky Busienss, Top Gun, A Few Good Men, and Mission Impossble (I couldn’t go to sequels), I really wish I could reclaim those eight or ten hours of my life.

You sure TC was in Wild Hogs??
Scientology must be a better gig than we thought. For recently having been promoted to the #2 slot in that gaggle of whack jobs, he still has more $$ than most everyone else who has joined. Guess the Executive doesn’t have give up every worldly possesion and red cent they have.
Having said all that, I’m still jealous as sin…I’ll be lucky to ever even see a RR.

(6) Scottie says:

So I’m in our study last night beginning to work on our income taxes and my wife is surfing channels and locks onto A Few Good Men. So not only am I working on taxes, I had to listen to TC pretend to be an actor once again. What a horrible movie. Some particularly bad scenes, like the banter with the guy at the newstand, the drunk scene, the “I can’t think without my bat” scene, and any scene in which he tries to be funny. It just goes on and on. Of course, Demi doesn’t help the situation either.

I deserve the Ducati just for enduring that.

(7) OK NAZI's says:

OK, lets just lay off his religion. If you have the money to by a great bike good for you. When America can make a good bike (yes Harley people I’m talking to you) I think you people wouldn’t care if Tom bought one. Pathetic.

He’s a rich dweeb and it’s not a religion…

(11) DesmoFool says:

Actually, from the European press reports(check MCN), Tom Cruise didn’t get D12 #001, he only got the first U.S. model. The U.K. customers and other EU countries have already been receiving delivery for weeks now. A guy in England got the #001 model.

DesmoFool,

I’m looking into the details, and will clarify when I know more… in the meantime, I’m switching the headline to “… First Desmosedici.”

(14) DesmoFool says:

Sorry, Basem, didn’t mean to sound like a factoid weasel, but if I can take credit away from Mr. Cruise, all the better! No, in reality, I wish every lucky owner of the D16RR the best of luck with a barely street-legal MotoGP machine, espcially to whomever gets the first one ‘for the street’. Now if only Ducati could make a bike just as good for half the price…oh wait, the 1098R! Hmm, still too expensive. Guess I’ll have to suck it up and ride away on a pearl white 848…Darn…

(15) motorcycles says:

No man, I appreciate you speaking up!

Things aren’t looking very good for a Desmosedici test ride, but I’m looking forward to sampling the 848 & writing a review…

Basem….if you should ever happen to find a RR parked in your driveway, please call me. I’ll be on the next plane.

(18) motorcycles says:

Pete,

If an RR shows up in my driveway, I may just be able to head out to your neck of the woods… a trans-country Desmosedici cannonball would make for a cool story.

A couple years ago I saw a 999R parked in front of a five star hotel in southern Spain. The bike was filthy as heck, and covered with thousands of miles of road grime… the license plates were German, which really put a smile on my face.
