Yamaha Star V-Max

The venue for yesterday's unveiling of the 2009 Yamaha Star V-Max spoke volumes of this bike's bad boy image: the USS Midway, a massive Navy aircraft carrier, was decked out with A6 Intruders, CH53 helicopters, and one tire-melting power cruiser that debuted with a deliciously raucous smoky burnout.

Equipped with an all-new 197 horsepower V-Four, muscular styling, a 4-1-2-4 exhaust system with titanium canisters, and a power-to-weight ratio better than a Ferrari Enzo, the V-Max will hit the streets in late October/early November. It looks like Yamaha is going for extreme exclusivity: the V-Max will be priced at $17,990, and only 2,500 bikes will be produced this year. $1,000 deposits are being accepted now.

Hopefully we'll have an opportunity to ride and review this bad boy, but in the meantime check out our 2009 Yamaha Star V-Max photo gallery.

Power cruisers have always seemed like a strange segment to me. Typically they haven’t had the power of a sport bike or the laid-back riding position and classic looks of a cruiser, so who buys them?

Got that right, Mr. Wasef! Although, I had originally thought that this bike would be more for racing instead of mainly a drag bike. I can’t wait to read some ride reviews.

When the original V-Max was introduced (Mid 90’s?)a professional drag racer nick named Pee Wee Herman was hired to make a few filmed passes and he put it solidly in to the 10’s. The vidoes were black marketed for months and and eventualy made it in to a short lived YMC TV ad. It was very cool stuff then.
Scottie is right…the bike is neither fish nor fowl - but - it is crazy fast!

I think the bike is great but I’m not sure if I would put down $18,000 when I can get superfast sport bikes for a lot less. Now if you want to pay for the cool factor that is something else!!! I ride between 15 and 20 thousand miles a year. The V-Max would make a great second bike but not a good primary ride for me. But I do like to go fast!!!
