Ten Great First Motorcycles
It's a natural temptation to crave a wicked fast sportbike or a heavyweight cruiser as your first motorcycle, but there are a number of reasons why that's a bad idea: not only will you learn more quickly on a smaller, lighter bike, you'll also become a better rider when it becomes time to upgrade.
After discussing the topic of first bikes with our knowledgeable forum members and bouncing ideas off of Motorcycle Industry Council guru Ty van Hooydonk, I whittled down a list of Ten Great First Motorcycles, all of which cost under $5,000. The list covers bikes that are great options for people brand new to motorcycling, and each will make a great steppingstone to bigger, heavier, and faster bikes down the road*.
With 18% of car drivers considering a leap to motorcycles according to Consumer Reports (primarily due to high gas prices), it's important to approach riding with the respect it deserves. If you're new to motorcycling, you'll also want to check out these related articles:

There’s great deal at Canadian Honda dealers that American Honda, for some inexplicable reason, passed on.
The CBR125R….$3500 get’s you the bike, 3 year warranty, Joe Rocket / Honda Jacket, Pants, Boots, & Gloves.
Sounds like a helluva deal!
Wish we got the CBR125 here in the States… kinda makes me wistful for the MB5.
