Nonconformist Alert: Derringer Cycles' Board Track-Style, 180 mpg Mopeds
If you're looking for a devilishly stylish way to get around on two wheels and just can't envision yourself on a scooter, check out these board track-inspired mopeds manufactured by Derringer Cycles, as seen on Autofiends.
Los Angeles-based entrepreneur Adrian Anz says he "just couldn't find that missing link between my Schwinn and my Ducati," so he built the Whizzer-like oddballs and named them after the pocket-sized, 19th century pistols because they're "small, powerful, and dangerous."
A visual antipode to the dorky but lovable Puch and Tomos mopeds that have made a recently made a resurgence, these bespoke creations weigh only 48 pounds, are powered by a 4-cycle, CARB-approved, 49cc Honda engine, and feature a centrifugal clutch. Technically classified as a motorized scooter in California, they don't require a license and can hit almost 40 miles per hour.
These custom creations are offered in a palette of 250 colors, and start at about $3,500-- the same price as the considerably more populist Ninja 250R. For more, go to derringercycles.com.
