Celebrate Summer's End & Stay Safe This Labor Day Weekend

If you're hitting the road this weekend for the last two-wheeled hurrah of the season, consider the recently published findings by Nationwide Insurance: 98% of Americans claim to be safe drivers, but 72% admit to partaking in distracting behavior while driving... not to mention some motorcyclists who have distraction issues of their own, like this guy.

Once you've defeated the distractions within, check out Nationwide's tips on avoiding motorists who aren't completely focused on the task at hand:

  • Look inside a vehicle’s windows to determine if a driver is fully focused on the road. If a driver appears distracted, try to avoid passing the vehicle. Or, if you must pass, give the car additional space.
  • Drivers might pose a greater risk while moving, but remember to fully study your surroundings (including checking your mirrors) while stopped. You can identify who has seen you – and who is distracted - and adjust your actions accordingly.
  • Take care to leave your headlights on, use reflective strips on your clothing and motorcycle, avoid blind spots and flash your brake lights when stopping to maximize your chance of being seen by a distracted driver.

For more weekend tips, also check out our 10 Ways to Stay Visible article, How to Plan a Motorcycle Trip piece, and Tips on How to Ride in Groups.

    Enjoy the long weekend!
