TV Review: Sons of Anarchy on FX Networks

Monday September 1, 2008
Sons of Anarchy Review

Mainstream depictions of motorcycling are usually either warm and fuzzy ("Then Came Bronson"), culturally groundbreaking (Easy Rider), adventurous (The Great Escape), or simply standard issue cool (Fonzie in "Happy Days").

Adding an element of dark grit to the motorcycle genre, FX Networks is debuting their dramatic series "Sons of Anarchy" this Wednesday at 10PM Eastern/Pacific. The show depicts a Californian outlaw biker gang, and features Charlie Hunnam, Katey Sagal, Ron Perlman, and a whole mess of Harleys.

I've previewed the first two episodes, and to read my thoughts on this televised depiction of two-wheeled life on the edge, check out my Sons of Anarchy Review.

That might be good…if nothing else Ron Perlman is a great actor. Let’s hope they tell it like it is instead of a Hollywood / James Dean’ed version.

The public is not ready to understand the depiction / concept of the 1% gang as the exception to the masses. This type show could justifiy in a soccor Moms view it’s OK to run that biker off the road while on my cell phone because there all dangoures bikers, I’ll protect my family and the rest of sociaty! It’s taken a long time for the stigma of the 1%er gang to fade away in Joe publics mind, we need more of “You meet the nicest people on a Honda” image and the Fonz, not I’m selling your kids drugs and taken your old lady to a orgy image. Motorcyclist represent about 5% on population and something like another 5% that has contact or knows a rider, that leaves 90% that too easily will accept the worst of the loly 10% that TV instilling them to fear! Look how Sport bike riders are portrayed, bank robbers, shooters ect making a fast get away. Stunt riding clubs terrorizing moms and there kids in there SUV’s. And now we have segments of legislation and insurance companies trying to bane sport bikes or restrict top speed capabilities.

I’ve watche the shows and for the most part none of these guys would make a pimple on a real 1%er’s butt. It’s an ok show but it’s definitly not “for real”.
