Photo Gallery: The 2008 Honda CRF230L, One of Our 10 Great First Motorcycles
Most people usually don't think dual purpose when they're buying their first bike, but if you want the flexibility of going offroad you've got a few solid options.
Near the top of my list-- and one of our 10 Great First Motorcycles, is Honda's CRF230L. It's got a lot going for it, with a single-cylinder engine, a light weight body, and simple controls. Not only did I test it on urban roads and highways, I also loaded up it up onto its automotive counterpart, the Honda Ridgeline (pictured here), and took it offroad. I'll publish my riding impressions in a separate review; meanwhile, take a look at my Photo Gallery of the 2008 Honda CRF230L.

Hi there, Kent.
The CRF230L’s engine will have to work a bit hard when carrying larger-framed riders; it might be fine for around town errands, but strained at freeway speeds.
You might want to check out our beginner or advanced beginner bikes, though the latter list features bikes with taller seat heights.
Good luck, and keep me posted on how your search goes!
