Photo Gallery of the 2009 Harley-Davidson XR1200, Soon to be Available in the U.S.!
It seems the whining has finally paid off-- after seeing the Harley XR1200 sold on foreign shores but unavailable stateside, Milwaukee's slick dirt tracker-inspired Sportster will finally be sold here in the good ol' U.S. of A.
We suspected this might happen following a certain trademark application, and based on a Westminster, California dealership's website, pre-orders will be available now through December 15th. The bike, listed with an MSRP of $11,179, wears a brawny 90 horsepower, air-cooled V-twin, beefy brakes, and a dry weight of 551 lbs. A total of 750 bikes (in homage to the famed XR750) should be available, with more on tap if demand is strong enough.
For shots of the bike we'll soon be able to buy (and stop complaining about not having at our disposal), check out our 2009 Harley-Davidson XR1200 Photo Gallery.

I gotta be honest here, I don’t know whether to say “about time,” or “too little, too late.” I, like most motorcycle enthusiasts, was excited at the initial prospect that we might finally get to see this bike, after being bummed that we were cut off from it. But now that Buell has released the 1125CR, I don’t think I’m leaning that for towards the XR1200 anymore.
I understand Harley wanting to build excitement and anticipation for this bike, watching us salivate and throw tantrums, but they should have released it before Buell released their new cafe racer. Sure, they’re probably not going to be considered ‘direct competitors’ (I’d say the Buell XB12S would be an exact match), and Buell going with a Rotax motor instead of a Sportster motor gives it a serious performance edge, but in terms of price, I’d say they would be cross-shopped.
I know the kind of riding I like to do, and the 1125CR would be a better fit for me. But the style of the XR1200 is what’s been tugging on my heart strings since I first saw it. Unfortunately, I think that may be it’s only draw for the 20-35 demographic.
I have to laugh at gallery image #8, the guy looks to be traveling under 30mph and is leaned over a half degree and is already riding the pipes. Harley can park this one next to their crossbones and the other one with the silly little passenger seat…
I have to agree with Mick…
Put a Buell engine in it and we;re talking…
All I can say—It is still a Harley–Over priced and over rated. The Buell is the better Bike and a non-Harley engine.
I hate Harley’s rode european bikes all my life. But now they have a knee slider with 90 hp and 57 mpg? Most European bikes can’t touch that mix of figures. It looks great, sounds great, no anti freeze, water pumps… to worry about? I want it!
Thank the gods that harleys have no radiators, one less item to worry about falling off…
Are you kidding me? The new fuel injected Harleys are strong and dependable, besides this is the same bike Evil Knievel made all his jumps on!
All his jumps were on Harley’s?? Check your facts.
I agree with GB “All I can say—It is still a Harley–Over priced and over rated.”
i went to a harley day at the williams factory in oxfordshire…i liked the bikes but even though they were only 6 months old, loads of the nuts and bolts were rusty already
Took a test ride on the XR this weekend. Went well. I like the look and the ride.
Whellie in first and second, I couldn’t wait to get to the next stop light to do it again !
Looks like I’m hooked,They dropped the price down $500 right away and $1000 for the demo bike with 175 miles on it.
My bikes for sale, I’m buying one !
