I saw a prototype of BMW's S1000RR superbike at last year's Cycle World International Motorcycle Show, and just smiled and nodded when a BMW rep told me it would be priced within $1,000 of its Japanese competitors. A BMW bike that's within a grand of its (rather capable) competition? Pretty unheard of, especially considering the $14,750 price tag for a bare bones example of BMW's enduro flagship, the R1200GS.
Almost a year later, the promise turns out to be (pretty much) true: the BMW S1000RR will be priced at $13,800... which, lo and behold, is within firing distance of the Honda CBR1000RR ($12,999), Yamaha R1 ($12,390), and Suzuki GSX-R1000 ($12,899.) The figure is a bit further off from the $11,799 Kawasaki ZX-10R, but for that, we forgive BMW.
The World Superbike version of the S1000RR which debuted earlier this year at Monza might be suffering from teething pains as it gets up to speed on the global race circuit, but for civilians like you and me, it's looking like the street version will be drool-worthy, indeed.

Any idea what the Aprilia RSV1000R will cost?
The S1000RR seems to have all of its Euro competition beat, at least in regards to pricing. Even fully optioned, it’s less expensive than a BASE model Ducati 1198 (which does not have DTC).
This is good. The Japanese need some added heat on the pricing and innovation fronts.
TEvo,
You mean the Aprilia RSV4? I don’t think U.S. pricing has been announced yet, but you can bet they’re taking a serious look at this discounted landscape.
And yeah– lower prices and innovation are always a good thing!
Basem
I seem to be have had a flashback moment when I posted that.
Yes, I meant the RSV4.
