How do you draw fresh meat in a down market?
Harley-Davidson is hoping for a slew of conquest sales this January by adding a $500 credit to competitor brand trade-ins.
The promotion, which ends January 31st, covers new, untitled 2008, 2009, and 2010 Harleys. Unfortunately, the dwindling supply of Buells is exempt.
Fine print on Harley's trade-in website reveals that trade-ins must be "a two-wheel street legal motorcycle 150 cc or greater," but that "the Harley-Davidson dealer has the right to decline any trade-ins"... think they'll take my 175cc minibike?

Assuming I was even vaguely interested in buying a new garden tractor, an extra 500 bucks wouldn’t do it for me.
And you can bet that clause / loop hole regarding the right to refuse your trade in, is big enough to push an air craft carrier through.
How about some REAL discounts!
This is a very lame attempt by Harley to sell bikes…. $500… Thats not a deal, its a slap in the face. I highly doubt it will cause any significant amount of Harleys to be sold. Harley can get back to us when they realize why their bikes are not selling… (we dont have the money in this economy…. ddrrrr)
This doesn’t look like a good deal to me either. Maybe if it was $1500.
I might partake in it, if they gave me an additional $500 off for my Sportster as a trade-in. But, they aren’t offering it on Harley trade-ins.
$500…really…just $500. Come on Harley Davidson you can do better than that. Chevy is offering 72 months financing at 0 % financing. Other car manufacturers are offering 60 months at 0 % financing. Catch the drift here Harley Davidson???
I just recently bought a 2009 Vulcan 1700 cc for $12,000 this summer. Harley doesn’t even come close to this price & throwing in the routine maintence and insurance, comes out way cheaper all the way around in this tough economic times. Money doesn’t grow on trees !!!!
The dealers will probably low-ball the value of your trade-in by $500, so then nothing’s lost and nothing’s gained.
Are they kidding? When the price of some of the big twins exceeds $30,000, $500 is a joke. This is a company run by jokers with their heads in the sand! They had to drop Buells, and divest M-V Augusta just to stay afloat. I really would like to know what the long term strategy is because they aren’t making any sense to me at all.
Victor, the Super Glide is around $12,000. Insurance is based on the type of bike (cruiser or sportbike would be an example) and how big the motor is (cc’s) so insurance would be about the same. . Maintence of my Harley and my friend’s Metric are about the same. I do agree HD could have done something like 0% financing, that would have been a good idea instead of $500 for a trade in.
Yeah, H-D isn’t for everyone. But if you like touring and cruisers, this isn’t a bad deal considering how fast most non-Harleys drop in resale. Do your homework and go talk to a dealer.
Hi Joe – Didn’t know that a super glide was the same price, but, i believe that is only a 1600cc. So, price wise the 1700cc still comes out cheaper.
Nothing against Harley. I just think that they are over price.
Victor, there are 11 HD’s that are under $14000. When you are talking about 1600cc and 1700cc I figured their isn’t much difference, pretty close to the same size. I have a friend with a Mean Streak, Kawie makes some nice bikes, I wish you the best with your new ride.
Sounds to me like Harley is grasping at straws. Some significant discounts and/or zero financing for qualified buyers would make more sense. How about free 2 yr scheduled maintenance and a n/c 1K service?
Come on H.D. $500.00, this is a big joke. The dealer will screw you out of this money before you get out the door. I know H.D. is hurting but, give the buyer a break. You may have to pour milk on the bikes and eat them H.D.
Brian,
Don’t believe all that ‘back in the day’ hype about resale on HD’s. Have a look through a paper and see what the pages $ pages of used Harleys are worth.
Dime a dozen now…..
Pete – Yep and they’re still holding up better than most non-Harleys. Besides I never get invited to ride my Harley to the Honda shop for a test ride, trade consideration, open house, dice run, etc…. oh yeah, they’re out-of-business
I’m very happy with H-D. To each is own, but you’ve got nothing to lose by visiting your local dealer on this one.
You brought up some good points Brian.
Having been in the automotive,rv,and motorcycle business in dealerships for over 25 years, trust me,that $500.00 will be massaged into the deal somewhere.Whether it’s trade in, total sales price,or financing. What a joke!
Gary,
Right on. That’s what I was saying. The trade in would be the easiest, because many times that is subjective.
I’d have to say this offer doesn’t stimulate my package!
Let me just say I’m keeping my Stratoliner.
H.D. is playing a head game with these people. Well, $500 bucks will get them in the door. The old bait and screw them trick. Come on H.D. this is the old snake oil show trick. I don`t care too much for A H.D. BUT, give the people who like these bikes a break. Lower you prices to a normal price. $ 500 bucks is A BAIT AND TRICK DEAL. HA HA. Wise up or you will have GONE OUT OF BUSINESS sign on you door.
So if you are a loyal HD customer you don’t get the $500 for trading in? I understand they want riders of other types of bikes to switch to HD but what about the ones that have been riding the product for years. I hate when companies pull stunts like this!
I have a question for all you readers. Harleys almost always sell at MSRP and all acessories are MSRP minus 10%.Depending on the dealer the bikes are minus a lot of little things that need to be changed to make it look good and most changes require the part plus the kit to make the change at an additional charge so you can put two or three thousand in it without adding a lot so are you smarter to buy new or buy used with all the decorations done. The dealers don’t give you anything when you do all the work and think it will add to the value. The various models don’t change that much year to year so what is the way to go?
