Grizzly Motorcycle Wreck Rattles Toronto

By , About.com GuideSeptember 1, 2010

Follow me on:

I usually don't rattle off stories about horrific motorcycle wrecks, as bike-phobic cagers are usually the ones perpetrating cautionary tales about how bad things can get when two-wheelers are handled irresponsibly. But this story, brought to my attention by reader Pete, shows the potential consequences when a motorcyclist rides well beyond his or her limits.

A Canadian news item recounts how an unidentified rider-- traveling at an estimated 180-190 km/hr (roughly 110-120 mph)-- was riding a "racing-style motorcycle" and weaving through traffic. We've all seen this sort of thing firsthand, no doubt, but what followed in this instance was nothing short of shocking.

I won't go into the gruesome details, but ask you to check out this CNEWS story and comment here on this unfortunate but obviously avoidable incident: what do you think would be fair punishment for this rider if he or she is captured by Canadian authorities?

That’s plain and simple man slaughter if not murder and they should get the punishment attached to those crimes.

Another A$$ on a sportbike thinking the road is his race track. Hope they find him and put him a away for a long time.

I think if caught this rider should be flayed. It’s bad enough when motorcyclists ride like they’re at a Moto GP event in traffic. It’s ignorant to ride that way when you are solo, but a whole different level of stupid if you have a passenger.

Lots of crazy riders out there like this guy on a BMW S1000RR doing 192 MPH on the Long Island Expressway. Whoooosh!

The uproar and outrage in the motorcycling community here is building. He best hope the police get him before his ‘peers’ find him.
This is as bad as it get’s and simply devising ways to create new punishments is becoming a challenge.

Lot of guys on Sportbikes think the road is their race track, all they really are are LOSERS and they are giving the rest of us motorcyclist a bad image. Slow down or take it to the track.

Joe…as I’ve been reminded on a few occasions, not all HD riders are dirt bags, and not all HD’s are a P.O.S.
By the same token, the majority of sport bike riders are not asses.
In all likelihood the same % of HD riders that are dirt bags, will be the same as the % of sport bike riders that are idiots.
Let’s not lose sight of the reason this was posted.
Fair enough?
I’ll let everyone know when they catch this axxhole.

Pete, why is it ALWAYS HD when you talk to me??? I talk about other bikes and subjects but when you refer to me it is always in reference to HD. WHY??? This post has nothing to do with HD. In your words “Let’s not lose sight of the reason this was posted.” Fair enough?? As far as sportbike and them riding like ass, most of the accidents on sportbikes are cause by them riding like idiots (excessive speed, cutting in and out of traffic, popping wheelies, etc. ). I don’t feel that is the case with cruisers. This isn’t to say that cruiser rides are never at fault in an accident, just that it’s rare that the cause is because of riding like this guy did. I am sure this is one of the reasons why the insurance for sportbikes is SOOOO MUCH higher for them. Sorry if you can’t handle me saying something negative against your beloved sportbikes.

(10) Pete says:

Joe, you’re right..that was a cheap shot. Apologies.
It did sound a bit like you were trying to lump all sport bike riders in to the same dumpster as this scumbag. The 5th estate – most of whom had to check the spelling of motorcycle* – are doing a fine job of crucifying us, along with Mr & Mrs public who believe everything they read. A buddy at work tells me today of a friend who was asked at a traffic light if “he was the axxhole that killed the girl”.
Suffice to say, it’s wearing a little thin for the thousands of riders of all kinds of bikes who would love to make sure this guy never procreates.
At the end of the day, the guy that did this didn’t need a sport bike to do it…he’d have done it on any kind of bike and probably his car too. Granted the HP made it easier to show what he’s made of.
Lots of sport bike riders push it pretty hard… all but a small % have the brains to know when & where to have some fun. No one either one of us knows is capable of doing what this guy did.
Cheers! Pete

Just announced…they’ve identified the woman (not a girl..she was 40 yrs old). Now – that may be the first nail in his coffin.

(12) Joe says:

It’s all good Pete, just trying to say that this kind of riding by some sportbike riders makes all of us look bad. That’s not to say cruiser rides don’t have a cross to bare, the 1%ers image makes us look bad also. Lets hope they catch this idiot soon. We should all send prays out to this woman’s family. Joe

I agree with Cadillac Jack, if I was this girls father this idiot better hope the police got to him before me.

I’ve been riding bikes for only four years but in that time I have never, and will never, ride with someone sitting behind me for specifically this reason. If I ever go down, whether it be my own fault or the fault of someone else, I can only imagine the way I would feel if something had happened to them. I admit that occasionly I ride and drive a little more spirited but when I have a passenger you would think I was driving the Queen of England. Let’s all be honest, it’s bad enough that we all face some risk by choosing to ride in the first place so I would absolutely never risk the health of a friend or loved one for something that’s very easly avoidable to begin with by just saying no. Since I’ve gotten my bike my friends and family have asked me to take them for a ride somewhere and my answer will always be no. If they really need a ride somewhere I have plenty of room in my car. It might not have the same thrill as being on the back of my bike but at least I know this way they’re safer. Just my two cents.

(15) Scottie says:

We haven’t told my in-laws I bought a bike. My F-I-L is a retired doctor. I ride in the country without much traffic. My wife hasn’t even been on the bike this year.

If anything ever happened to my wife on the bike I would fall on the sword.

(16) Pete says:

Not so much in recent years with a sport bike – for the simple reason they’re brutally uncomfortable for a passenger – but my wife and I have tens of thousands of miles riding together.
She is a superb passenger and enjoys it just as much as I do. I still manage to get my hands on something suitable / comfortable for 2 up once or twice a season and we’re gone for a day or so.
It’s part of riding and part of us…always has been and always will be.
Nothing slows me down more than someone I love sitting behind me…and I have absolutely no problem dialling it way back so we both have good time.
This guy here last weekend clearly has little respect for his own life…no reason he should be worried about anyone else.

The link won’t open for me, but having seen a motorcycle rip under the back of a stopped truck in traffic in Montreal back in the early 70’s, leaving a helmet with a head in it rolling toward the curb 5 feet from where I was strolling, I probably don’t need to read the account — but I do want to point out that this being a story out of Canada, with a title about a “Grizzly,” I expected another bad pun had loosed itself from a Canadian, zoo, eh? What I find pretty GRISLY, is what’s happening to the English language. Nobody gives a what-a-grizzly-does-in-the-woods about getting it right.
