Harley-Davidson has dropped the curtain on the remainder of its 2012 lineup, adding the new Switchback and V-Rod 10th Anniversary bikes and ditching four models: the Rocker C, Cross Bones, Sportster 1200 Low, and Street Glide Trike.
Though new models could be added to the lineup (as the Blackline was earlier this year), the 2012 models are currently balanced at 32 bikes, including 4 CVO models.
The $15,999 Switchback is a new member of the Dyna family, and offers a similar presto-chango cruiser/touring bike versatility as the pricier CVO Softail Convertible. The $15,999 V-Rod 10th Anniversary Edition is mostly a cosmetic job with chrome bits and inverted forks, and can be ordered in any color you want... as long as it's Brilliant Silver Pearl.
In other 2012 model year news, the Twin Cam 103 powertrain is now standard equipment on Softail and Touring models, and most of the Dyna family.

Okay, I get it. Make a smaller, more affordable Road King. It’s a good idea, and an attractive bike. Might even sell in decent numbers. But calling it a ‘Switchback?’ Very funny, must be an inside joke by their marketing guys. I’ve seen too many baggers ‘capsize’ on switchbacks when the hard parts touch down. But I can see why they did it…I mean Harley ‘Straightline’ or Harley ‘Slabber’ just don’t have the same ring to it. On a serious note though, I wonder if the size of those hard bags (they look a little small) might be a bit of a detractor. Too bad, because overall it looks good.
And why are they still trying to make so many iterations of the V-Rod? I thought they were done putting lipstick on that pig. It’ll still be ugly as sin, no matter how you dress it up. Especially that grotesque ‘Muscle’ model…it looks like a broken Transformer held together with glue and legos.
Kev, you should really read and do research before commenting, the Switchback name is referring to the bikes ability to remove the saddlebags and windshield in a matter of seconds (quick releases) making the bike go from a cruiser to a bagger. Being able to “Switchback” and forth. I do agree that I think the Switchback will sell well, I think a lot of people in the market for a crusier/bagger bike will like this bike.
The Switchback does seem to look like a Road King “Lite”, no?
Wow Joe. Relax big guy, I was being facetious. Do you know what sarcasm is, or do you need to “read and do research?” I mean, really Basem? Do we have to put up with this? We’re all required to do ‘research’ to comment on your motorcycle blog now?
Man, some of you guys take these interwebs way to seriously.
Kev, what’s your problem. It sounded like you didn’t know why HD was using the Switchback name and I told you. If you try and use Sarcasm in print it really does NOT work, so I do NOT buy that excuse. If you want to cry to Basem (mommy) because I correct you when you are wrong I would hate to see how you handle day to day in your life. Grow up Kev.
Ah, I see. How immature. Since these kinds of personal attacks are tolerated here, I’ll be sure and point the rest of my fellow columnists and industry insiders I know away from this blog from now on. Best not to feed the troll.
C’mon, guys. Play nice.
