Helmet Laws by State

Ah, the freedom of the open road... except, of course, when you cross state lines and need to adapt to various helmet laws, eye protection regulation, rules on riding two abreast, and highway speed limits. And don't let this seemingly simple, color-guided map fool you-- each state has its own stipulations regarding age, experience level, and equipment.

To simplify your planning-- whether to a neighboring state for a quick cruise, or across the country for one of America's finest roads-- take a look at Road Rules: Helmet and Touring Laws by State.

I see several states only require a helmet if you’re under a certain age. I guess adults are less likely to hit their heads when they fall off….who knew?!
The one I found especially interesting is the states that require “reflectorization” instead of a helmet.
I have to ask…what do you do with the reflectors…?
Velcro them to your head? Earrings? Thrown them at stupid car drivers? Drop them on the road just before you hit?
I would think it’s probably confusing crossing state lines…”Let’s see – do I take off my helmet and put on my reflectors…no wait other way around…Damn, I can’t remember”.
“Officer—where should I stick these reflectors?”
“Where?”
“Geez..it was just a question!!”.
I guess that’s why lawmakers have their jobs….they must be smarter than the rest of us.

My question is – reflectors on the bike or on the helmet? Or no helmet if the bike has reflectors?

To clarify, when reflectorization is required, that refers to states where helmets are already mandatory; ie, you need a helmet that’s reflectorized.

Oops. Of course where I ride in upstate NY I don’t see many cars, let alone police. Wonder if they even know about reflectors on helmets?
