10 Bikes That Matter from the 2012 EICMA Motorcycle Show

2012 EICMA Motorcycle Show

EICMA, the biggest motorcycle show in the world, isn't just a showcase for the latest, greatest bikes from leading manufacturers-- it's an early peek into testbeds for future two-wheeled transportation. After all, you wouldn't expect bikes like the retro-futuristic, traction control-equipped Vespa 946 or the supermoto style MV Agusta Rivale Concept to debut anywhere else on earth.

As we did in 2011 and 2010, we're continuing our tradition of fielding the Motorcycle Industry Council's Ty van Hooydonk reports from the field, and this year he's supplied us with a list of 10 Motorcycles That Matter From EICMA; check it out, and drop a comment if any of those bikes make you want to clear a spot in your garage.

I think his list is misnamed. It should be 10 bikes, most of which only might matter in Europe”.
The North America market is cruiser crazy….there’s so many you can’t keep track and they all look like Harleys and each other. Not one Cruiser on his list, much less an HD. Neither HD or cruisers in general are my thing, but ignoring the genre and the fact it is a huge part of the N.A. market? I question the validity of his choices, or if nothing else he should take his blinders off.
Why is the 600RR on his list? Nice bike, lots of upgrades since ’03, but it’s the same bike it was in ’03. Why is the 675 on the list? Nice bike but not a big deal.
When’s the last time you saw a Vespa on the road over here? Assuming you want a scooter, there are FAR better choices than a grossly overpriced Vespa.
Speaking of overpriced…there’s the Brammo. Might matter one day, but it certainly doesn’t over here, or yet.
So, Mr. van Hooydonk…maybe a second list is in order. Yours means little or nothing over here, and our list (7 cruisers, 2 sport bikes, and a Wing) would mean nothing over there.

Pete, is right on the mark. What Europe likes and what North America likes in the way for vehicles are 2 different things. How many SUV do you think you’ll see if you visit Europe? Most of there vehicles are small cars, and diesels. Same goes for bikes, 2 different markets.
