Bargain Bobbers for the Rest of Us?

Tuesday September 4, 2007
Brass Balls Bobbers

Though defined by a less-is-more aesthetic that brings to mind bare bones economics, the cost of custom-built bobbers can be surprisingly steep.

If you're not handy with an arc welder and crave that oh-so-fashionable hipster look, Oklahoma City-based Darwin Motorcycles wants to win you over with their line of Brass Balls Bobbers. Powered by Harley-Davidson EVO, S&S Shovelhead, or Indian Power Plus engines, the street smart rides start at $16,995.

For an appropriately brief glimpse at their bikes, check out our Brass Balls Bobbers photo gallery.

I guess if I could afford mutliple bikes or even had time to ride them, I may have a Bobber, but they really are for show and I’m more practical. $17k isn’t exactly cheap either considering it’s a “back to basics” style.

Scottie,

Yeah, $17,000 isn’t exactly a small chunk of change. This manufacturer is using the same argument that Harley makes for their premium-priced Rocker and Rocker C: that you can’t get a comparable custom bike from a boutique for under $20k.

Custom bike builders have really skewed the economics of the market by making a $50,000 bike look downright affordable when compared to a $100,000 bike; talk about relativism gone awry!

That’s awesome. But seems like it could be a bit pricey.

Flyrite bikes in Austin has a nicer bike for less. You can also get a brand new Dyna from HD for around 12,500 for the basic model.
