What do you ride? List year, make, and model!
2005 BMW R1200GS
What do you love about your bike?
All round fun to ride. Very easy to maneuver & very minimal riding fatigue
Any dislikes?
None, except the standard worries of EWS, Final drive, Fuel-controller...
Where I bought it
I bought it from the dealer in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Overall a nice experience, but too many restrictions from dealer to avoid warranty being void...
Why I bought it
Have been a BMW affectionado since a long while (not too crazy about their four-wheeled toys). Happened that I accidentaly found a 1996 BMW bike catalogue in my boss' office and suddenly it was love at fist sight with the R1100RT. Searched around for one as there was no BMW bike dealer in Jeddah and then found a good deal on a 1996 R1100RT bike in Dubai. Bought, shipped, registered and enjoyed the bike for more than 10 years. It fit me like a perfect glove and gave me many thousands of trouble free kms. Then decided to upgrade to the newer 1200 series bike (lighter & more powerful) and also decided to move to something that can take on challnging roads, bad roads and no road! So there I got a good deal on an unused 2005 R1200GS (bought it in 2009). I am not into trail riding, but the GS handles all other kinds of roads like a song. Probably the best bike I have ridden in my 25 years of riding.
Tips and Tricks
- May not be too comfortable for the vertically challenged
- Unlike the old days newer BMWs have a lot of hi-tech stuff & so its always less hazzle when you have a dealer to turn to in the event of a breakdown. Worth registering at www.advrider.com. Lots of friendly folk to advise you on any topic related to the GS
- Its built like a tank and can take a lot of abuse.
- Most important accessory is a good engine guard to avoid damaging your engine in the event of even a small tip-over
- Enough & more aftermarket stuff available for the GS
