2001 Yamaha VStar 1100 Classic aka The BearStar

What do you love about your bike?

Solid as a rock and reliable as an anvil!

Any dislikes?

Not thrilled with the cruiser ergonomics anymore... I've evolved a bit

Where I bought it

Columbia PowerSports on Fernandina RD in Columbia SC. I took my 2000 Kawasaki VN800A in for service and wound up trading for the VStar. Have never regretted the decision.

Why I bought it

Impulse buy ... I was on vacation and the other bike wouldn't have been fixed ( warranty repair ) for two weeks so I traded it in on a new bike. Since then I have ridden more than 44,000 miles on this bike, wrecked it a couple of times and dressed it up in a custom paint job. Still enjoy riding it even though a Goldwing is now my primary motorcycle. The VStar 1100 has a lot of torque and by adding a better air filter kit and exhaust I was able to increase the midrange power and only gave up a little at the top end.

Tips and Tricks

  • Wind it out to the rev limiter! The bike really comes alive if you get into the upper end of the power band
  • This bike can be set up any way you want it - add a windshield and bags for touring, sissy bar for riding two-up or strip it down for a minimalist look. I have mine dressed up with a set of National Cycle hard bags and a solo seat.
  • Consider the oil filter relocation kit to make maintenance easier. Really.
