Where did you ride from/to?

Trailered from Bartow, FL to Tomah, WI. Left Tomah on a KLR 650. Rode to Alaska via the Alaska Hwy. Toured AK from Seward to Prudhoe and all points between. Then back to Tomah via the Cassiar Hwy and U.S.2. 11,700 mi on the KLR (stock seat)

What did you ride?

A fully outfitted KLR 650. Happy-Trails bags and crash bars, Wolfman panniers, etc. I bought a used '08 on ebay, drove to CT to pick it up and spent 3 months getting it ready. A lot of this time was spent making the after market accessories fit. I also replaced all the wearable items (chain/sprokets, tires, brake pads) with new items. Finally I installed a 685 kit to solve the '08 oil burning problem. By the way I did a lot of research on tires and settled on Mefo's. Don't waste your money! They didn't last any longer than the Kenda's I put on in Anchorage.

What I'd Do Differently

  • I'd take more time to sightsee. The trip was 5 weeks and I didn't have time to stay in any one place long enough to sight see. I'd also make better arrangements for new tires and chain/sprokets. Don't rely on dealers along the way.
