Where did you ride from/to?
Two of us rode from Santa Rosa California to Fairbanks and Anchorage Alaska and back. Rode through Oregon, Washington and British Columbia into Alaska via the Al-Can highway. Did it in 16 days and we didn't ride 2 of those days. Did it in June of '10 and were fortunate to hit very little rain. Rode through plenty of crappy roads though but the bikes held up well. Total mileage was about 7,500 roundtrip.
What did you ride?
I rode a 2009 Harley Ultra Glide CVO and my buddy rode a 2008 Harley Road King. No mechanical problems even though we took tools and spare parts. I would still take them for emergency reasons. Packing was at a premium so we had bags on the bikes that fit in our saddlebags for ease of unloading and loading bikes each day. Did not camp and were fortunate most days with a good place to stay each night.
What I'd Do Differently
- Ride less each day. Some days we rode over 700 miles.
- Take a bigger spare fuel bottle, had 1 quart size but should have brought the 1 gallon size.
- Pack less clothing and lighter weight stuff in summer.
- Bring both short and full-face helmets for weather changes.
- Pay for fuel inside stations in Canada if possible, not at the pump. Had card hacked at the pump somehow.
- Would take ferry from Prince Ruppert to Port Hardy BC heading back for a different experience.
